Why You Need a Business Consultant
Why You Need a Business Consultant.
There is an old adage that I have heard many times. I don’t know who said it first, and I won’t be the last to say it – “You just don’t know what you don’t know.” It is a humorous attempt at humor to remind us that in all situations there may need to be additional perspectives we don’t see. This is why you need a business consultant. You need to know where your business is (the state it is in) and where it is headed so you can avoid the obstacles that could derail your success.
Think about the GPS or aviation term “triangulation,” which is the act of finding out where you are in relation to other points located on a map. It is from the other perspectives we find out where we truly are. a business consultant can provide these alternate points to help you better see where your business is and where it can grow.
An Objective View
Sometimes in business, we become so close to the action we fail to see the big picture. The old adage “can’t see the forest for the trees” comes to mind. You have a vested interest in the success of your business. You have been involved in the details from the beginning. You know how every aspect of your company runs because you set it all in place when you started.
You really can’t have an objective view of your business. It is your “baby.” You only want what is best and no one can say anything bad about it. You might have blinders on.
You need someone with an objective view of what is going on. This is one of the best reasons to have a business consultant come and evaluate what you and your staff are doing. Is everyone working together? Does everyone know your mission or goals? Are there things that could be done to make you more successful that you can’t see because you are too close to the action?
Outside of “Your” Box Thinking
Sometimes in business, there are processes and policies in place that have become obsolete, but because it is the way we were taught, it is the way we continue, no matter what.
An experienced business consultant knows how to recognize these types of pitfalls and can suggest alternatives you might not have thought of. Experienced consultants reflect back over years of work with various businesses to glean ideas from their past successes. Adaptation of past proven techniques can often propel a company forward to places they would not have imagined.
If It Ain’t Broke Don’t Fix It – Isn’t Always True
Let’s think about this statement for a moment. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it is a tried and true saying. It has been believed to be a very common-sense way to look at business life, but is it true? Does Ford Motor Company still sell the Model T? It wasn’t broken when they decided to change, was it? Or let’s think about the railroad industry. As transportation changed, they didn’t. What used to be one of the most powerful industries in the county is now a remnant of what it once was. The railroad industry looked at themselves as a train company. They failed to see that they were a transportation company. If they had realized that they would have changed their business and adapted to the changing times.
I would say they didn’t realize that their company was broken, they just didn’t know it. A business consultant can often help you realize the changing trends and the steps you can take to adapt.
Clear Path To Success
To walk through life there are some who like to forge ahead and create a new path. But there is a lot to be said about a clearly marked path as well. There are many stories about people who have wandered off the path and have been lost forever.
A business consultant with knowledge of sound business principles can help lead a company out from wandering aimlessly to a clear path where success is much more achievable.
